Basic Care
for a New Tattoo
There is a question that constantly comes up from
individuals who have just gotten a brand new tattoo -- how long
after a new tattoo can you swim, bath or shower? Well,
your tattoo artist should provide you with after-care
instructions on what activities to avoid and how to keep your
new tattoo clean and bacteria free. If they didn't, there
are some general guidelines that can be followed for caring for
your new tattoo.
To Shower or Bathe?
First off, there is nothing wrong with showering and
maintaining basic personal hygiene. However, avoid
bathing, swimming, or any activity that would result in your
new tattoo being submerged in water, even for only a few
minutes.
Tattoo Cleanliness is Key
Using a mild soap on your tattoo once or twice a day is
desirable to ward off any bacteria or infection. Be sure
to avoid scrubbing your tattoo with a harsh wash cloth or
scrubbers.
You should use a mild liquid soap applied only with your
hand and fingertips. Then gently wash off any residual
soap and suds with clear water. Very gently blot the
tattoo area with a clean, soft towel.
Now to avoid the chance of infection, apply a light coating
of an anti-bacterial ointment or cream (e.g. Neosporin).
This will kill off any bacteria that you encounter throughout
the day and keep the area germ-free.
How Long?
Generally speaking, this procedure should be maintained for
a period of 7-10 days, depending on the location and size of
the tattoo. If you have questions about the appropriate
length of time to maintain these post-care methods, we
recommend you consult with your tattoo artist.
So, we hope these guidelines provide you with the basic answer
to how long after a new tattoo can you swim, bath or
shower. Just remember these points: avoid
activities where you may immerse your brand new tattoo in
water, clean the area daily with mild soap, gently pat dry with
a clean towel, and use an anti-bacterial ointment to avoid
infection. Remember these simple basics and your tattoo
should give you years of care-free pleasure.
